If I integrate the CMP via the Google Tag Manager, should the GTM be categorized as "essential"?

Unfortunately, we are not authorized to give legal advice, but we can share our experience with you. Basically, the Google Tag Manager can be classified as essential or functional. It is especially relevant whether the Tag Manager is used to exercise the GDPR regulations or not. If, for example, the Usercentrics CMP script is integrated via the GTM, you can consider it necessary to in order to exercise the GDPR and thus classify it as “essential”.

Please note: We do not recommend integrating the Usercentrics CMP via the Google Tag Manager. In many cases and depending on the individual Tag Manager setup, this can lead to problems with Race Conditions, so that the Consent information is not available in time. We recommend a direct embedding of the CMP into your website.
