Global Privacy Control (GPC) Signal
What is the Global Privacy Control Signal?
Global Privacy Control (GPC) offers a mechanism for consumers who want a comprehensive option that broadly signals the consumer’s opt-out request, as opposed to going website by website to make individual requests.
GPC can be set up in the website browsers that consumers are using, e.g Brave browsers. For other browsers such as Chrome, a browser extension can be downloaded in which consumers can set their preferences. In the case that an opt-out has been registered via the Global Privacy Control, the end-user has the possibility to double opt-in and change their privacy settings at any time.
How does Usercentrics handle the GPC signal?
The recognition of the GPC signal is enabled per default when using one of these framework types: CCPA, CPRA, VCDPA, CPA, CTDPA or UCPA. Whenever we get a signal from a browser or browser extension, that GPC is being used the following logic applies:
If there is previous implicit consent (the user didn’t see or didn’t interact with the banner previously), the GPC signal will be honored.
If there is a previous explicit consent (the user interacted with the banner), the GPC signal will be ignored.
If there is a GPC signal honored, the user will still be able to change their consent manually (via the Privacy Link or Privacy Button) and the manual interaction will be prevailed
How can a user know that the GPC signal is being honored?
Once the signal is being recognised, the user will be automatically opted-out and the message “The GPC signal is honored” will be displayed in the CMP.
